Lactation Specialists

International Board Certified

Lactation Consultant

What is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant® (IBCLC®)?

An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding. An IBCLC is certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners®, Inc. under the direction of the US National Commission for Certifying Agencies. An IBCLC works in a wide variety of health care settings, including hospitals, pediatric offices, public health clinics, and private practice. They have the highest level of training, experience and expertise when it comes to lactation. Lactation Consultants who carry the credentials "IBCLC" behind their names are specially trained and qualified to assist with every aspect of breastfeeding. The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant represents the "gold standard" in lactation consultant credentialing.

Certified Lactation Consultant

The CLC certification means that a person has received training and competency verification in breastfeeding and human lactation support including:

  • helping a baby latch on

  • counseling mothers

  • knowledge of milk production

  • practical feeding

  • special circumstances

  • feeding difficulties

  • prevention and management of sore nipples

  • breastfeeding and returning to work or school and more...

All of this gives the CLC a strong foundation with which to help moms and babies.

Lactation Educator

A Lactation Educator works with women, helping them learn about the best practices for breastfeeding their infants. People who become a Lactation Educator are not required to be in the medical profession. Instead, they may come from any walk of life but have a deep interest in helping women breastfeed their children. This is an entry-level position, so practitioners almost always work in situations where medical intervention during breastfeeding is not required. A Lactation Educator may work with pregnant and lactating women in a classroom environment, commercial setting or through an agency or medical facility that serves women and children.
